For Prabal Gurung, it’s a case of Great Expectations—in more ways than one. There’s the tragic literary figure of Miss Havisham, the embittered jilted bride of Dickens’s novel, who is the creative inspiration for his Fall 2011 collection. And then there are the wholly untragic great expectations underlying the strikingly rich fabric, embroidery, lace, and furs: the optimistic feeling that the economy’s giving opportunity to young Americans with an uptown point of view.
